The original magenta lasted well over a year. I installed this magenta in May of 2011 and the printer is already saying low in September of 2011. This is despite the fact I started semi-retiring in 2011 and used the printer even less. I have my doubts Lexmark filled this as an HY cartridge. The Lexmark software (at least on the C543dn) is designed to eat up toner. First, it uses color toner EVEN WHEN PRINTING BLACK AND WHITE unless defaults are turned off (It took me about an hour on the phone with Lexmark to get my setting correctly adjusted) and second the cartridge "counts" pages and shows "out" based on the count NOT the level of toner still available. I have measured an average of 30 ml (sorry I used old chem equipment to measure). Moreover, there is no way to override the "out" to continue printing.The conclusion here is that Lexmark offers these printer at low price and then plans on making up the difference on the toner. While I still use my laser printer for some printing, I have resorted to doing most jobs on my Cannon Ink Jet printer. At around $5 a cartridge (instead of $50) for the same number of jobs it is much more economical...
