Having just purchased a new cross shredder about a year and a half ago I almost didn't choose this product to review. Now I can say I am so very glad I did. This under desk design is so handy. My previous one had a very heavy lid as it was very good quality but it made a mess when you take off the lid to empty. Always had to get out the mini vac. Not any more. This has a drawer that is easy to remove take to the trash and then return. It has a clear window on the front to show when it is filling up.As for sound it is much quieter than my previous model, doing a side by side test this one wins hands down. I like the fact you can lay up to 60 sheets in the lift up top and close. If you have it turned on it will shred them all and you can go about your business. It does run about 30 seconds after all the shredding is done to fully clear the blades. I even tested the staples not a problem. Staples - sure, if you tear the sheets apart first. Don't put them in connected or it will jam. Don't put more than 15 sheets or it won't even operate. As for the collection bin - the shred pile up in the center and stop the machine regularly - you have to keep pushing them down and distributing them. So - as for the claim that you don't have to maintain it while you're shredding - false - it basically requires your watching it the whole time.However, it still takes more sheets than most shredders at a time, and it does at least take items with staples. I also like the smaller size, and the pull-out tray makes it easier (and less messy) to empty. So the concept is great. However, in my experience, it jams more frequently than other shredders. Stapled pages tend to make it bunch up and stop working. Thin paper (receipts, thermal paper) doesn't go through unless you force them (it appears that the teeth can't grab the thinner paper). These problems really water down the hands-free convenience. That said, it does work some of the time, and the pull-out tray makes it easier to empty, so it's my shredder of choice at the moment. I hope that Swingline continues to research and improve on the concept, though, to make it truly hands free.Edited to update: I decided to remove one star from my review due to continued aggravation with paper jams.
